First steps on country: Elizabeth Barney’s reunion story
When Elizabeth Barney first began learning about her family history, she never imagined where the journey would take her. More than a decade ago, a cousin invited her to visit and shared a family tree he had been carefully compiling. That moment encouraged her to begin tracing the stories on both her mother’s and father’s sides, slowly bringing together family lines that had long been separated.
This year, with support from Link-Up (Qld), Elizabeth travelled to meet her grandfather’s family for the first time. In the lead-up to the reunion she felt excited, hopeful and a little overwhelmed.
“I was really happy and couldn’t believe I was finally meeting my grandfather’s family. I had waited so long for that moment.”
When her cousins arrived earlier than expected, the emotion was immediate. She remembers standing on the steps as they pulled up, feeling everything hit her at once.
“As soon as I saw them, we all cried. It felt like something opened up inside me. I finally felt whole.”

Over the following days Elizabeth visited places deeply linked to her family’s story. Swimming in the Gregory River became one of the most powerful moments of her journey. Sitting in the cool water, she felt an instant sense of calm and connection.

A visit to Lawn Hill Station created another strong connection to her ancestors. Hearing that her great-great-grandmother Kitty is buried somewhere in that country filled her with determination to return.
Her cousins walked with her through country, sharing knowledge about the river, the plants, the bush medicines and the places their old people once lived and worked. Listening to them gave her a deeper understanding of where she comes from.

“I’m glad I had my feet on that land. I could feel my old people there. One day I hope we can find my great-great-grandmother’s resting place and put a headstone for her.”
Elizabeth hopes to bring her children back with her next year so they can learn about both sides of their family and experience the places that shaped their story. She shares heartfelt gratitude for the support she received throughout the process.
“Link-Up (Qld) brought me and my family back together. I’m so thankful. I don’t know where I’d be without this journey.”
Her time on country was filled with welcome, understanding and belonging – moments she will carry with her as she continues reconnecting with family and healing through place, knowledge and story.
